MIT International School (MITIS) students bagged Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar Awards from the College Board, USA.Younbeom Lee, from Grade 12, received the AP Scholar with Honor award while Maria Ana Katrina P. Naval and Joel Andrei C. Ramirez, from Grade 11, achieved the AP Scholar award for the AP exams held last May 2018.
Younbeom, who just graduated last May, garnered an average AP exam score of 3.40 in 5 different AP exams: Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Physics 1, and Psychology. On the other hand, incoming seniors Maria Ana Katrina and Joel Andrei got average scores of 4.33 and 3.67, respectively, in 3 AP exams namely English Language and Composition, Chemistry, and Psychology.
Aside from these scholar awards, the school celebrates the performance of all its AP students as they top the global averages. This year, 70% of MITIS students scored 3 or better, higher than the passing percentages of students in the Philippines and in the world. Only 69% of the AP scores of students in the Philippines are 3 or better while the global percentage is only 61%.
In addition, AP Psychology students of MITIS outperformed their global counterparts after achieving a class exam average of 4.00, a far cry from the national average which is 3.54 and the international average which is 3.14. In fact, 8 students from the said class got the highest AP score of 5.
This success, as all AP students agree, was brought about by the strong AP program MITIS offers and the enduring support of all members of the school community. “[The school] helped by giving us time and an avenue to learn in a dynamic way,” Joel shared. Iona Violeta Gibbs, an incoming Grade 11 student who acquired a score of 5 in both English Language and Composition and Psychology exams, agreed by sharing that AP pushed her out of her comfort zones and gave her the opportunity of learning with students of higher grade levels.
MIT International School’s AP Program continues to reap achievements as reflected by the commendable exam performance and admissions to top international universities of its AP learners. The school continues to be dedicated in providing rigorous academic opportunities to achieve “success for every learner.”
While Younbeom is now bound for the McGill University in Canada (ranked 32nd according to the QS World University Rankings 2018) as a chemical engineering student, incoming seniors who excelled in the AP exams are already preparing for admissions on top colleges and universities in the Philippines and abroad.
