MIT International School believes that learning becomes meaningful when learners see the connection between what they learn and how they are applied in real life. For this reason, MITISzens visited places in Laguna and Rizal as part of their Educational Field Trip for SY 2018-2019.
Students, including their teachers and guardian, had an early day last March 22 for a long drive towards their destinations. Lower grade students went to farms, gardens, and a historical place in Laguna. They first participated in different outdoor activities in Sta. Elena Farm such as obstacle course, zip lining, horseback and carabao – back riding, and lake viewing. Then, they learned the childhood life and experiences of the Philippines’ National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, in the exact place where he was raised now called, Bahay ni Rizal. Finally, students expanded their knowledge of the diverse flora and fauna of the Philippines through their visit of the UP Botanical Garden in Los Baños.
Meanwhile, high school students headed to the green hills, caves, and a museum in Rizal to appreciate science and art further. Their first destination was the wind turbines of the Pililia Windfarm where they experienced the beauty of sceneries atop the green mountains of Rizal and they learned how green energy is produced by harnessing it from the wind. After this, students became spelunkers as they traversed the Calinawan Cave famous not only of its rock formations and thriving community of organisms but also of its historical relevance. Their last stop was Pinto Art Museum where visitors can view a great number of visual art pieces worthy of praise.
Aside from providing a healthy break from the demanding pressure of school work, field trips are great opportunities for students to discover a greater meaning of things, places, and events around them. More importantly, education becomes more valuable when learners have fun just like how MITIS students had during the day-long activities.
