One of the bold initiatives the former school administrators took in just a year after MITIS opened in 2007 was to apply for accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), an agency accrediting schools in the US west coast and Asia-Pacific region. In 2013, the school received six-year accreditation affirming the MITIS’ dedication towards self-improvement. Last April 2019, the entire school community welcomed a three-person Visiting Committee for its second Full Visit which resulted to the granting of another six-accreditation until 2025.
Before the official visit, the school faculty and staff headed by the School Director, Mr. Dae Kwan Chung, facilitated a review of the current programs, activities, and policies of MIT International School by following the Focus on Learning protocol of WASC. From this, the Self-Study Report was submitted early 2019 and was examined by the Visiting Committee during their visit last April 21-25. The committee was headed by Dr. William Tackett, the then incoming Headmaster of Reedley International School, and included Mr. James Hopkins of Seoul Foreign School and Mrs. Mary O’Bryon-Jones as members. They visited classrooms and conducted meetings with key stakeholders of the school to verify the report submitted and help identify areas of strength and growth. During the presentation of findings held during the last day of the visit, the visiting committee members lauded the school for maximizing its resources to support student learning. Likewise, they gave important pieces of advice which then allowed school administrators to improve its current schoolwide plan for institutional development.
The entire school community celebrates its success of acquiring WASC accreditation as this provides better opportunities for MITIS graduates and allows it to facilitate better programs in support of success for all learners.
