MITIS holds Inter-House Competitions to develop leadership and camaraderie

What makes school life fun, exciting, and memorable? Well, MIT International School facilitates several activities for students, not only to support them academically, but to provide opportunities to hone their talents and show their creativity. Testament to this is the introduction of new student activities participated by different Houses; the Blue Thunders, the Fawke’s Fam, and the Greyffindors, for SY 2018-2019.

On the first day of school, the mechanics of House activities were introduced and students were divided into teams. Different events were planned for the entire school year where winning would mean merit points for the House and acquiring the most House points by the end of the year would bestow the Cup to the winning team and give pride to all its members.

The first inter-House event was the Peace Rally held during the celebration of the International Day of Peace. Each team prepared and presented a dance performance of the song ‘One Day’ by Matisyahu. It aimed to inculcate the important essence of being an agent of peace in the classroom and the school. This first House competition saw the winning of Fawke’s Fam Maroon House for their creative interpretative performance.

After this, the Houses were given the task of being relevant to their communities.  Following the theme “Share the Love,” each team made a video presentation where they recognized the contribution of people who work hard every day just to be able to provide for themselves and their families. The winning entry was chosen through the number of likes and shares in the school’s social media platforms. In the video entry of the Blue Thunders, they recognized the contribution of one of the school’s employees, Jonathan Patriarca, and gave his family tokens of appreciation. Meanwhile, Fawke’s Fam interviewed a cashier of a nearby convenience store and shared the plight of those families whose members live far apart just so they can bring food on their tables. The House surprised her with simple gifts in appreciation of her perseverance in life. Finally, the Greyffindors shared the everyday struggles of ordinary workers such as security guards, gasoline shop attendants, and street sweepers. They showed that no matter how their jobs may seem too ordinary, they help the community a lot especially their own families. During the students’ Year-End Thanksgiving Program, the entire community watched the video entries and recognized Greyffindors for winning the competition.

The next inter-House competition saw the Houses go toe-to-toe in different athletic activities during the school’s Sports Festival 2019 last January. Each sporting event, which included individual and group competitions, awarded points to winners. By the end of the month-long activity, Fawkes Fam emerged with the most number of House points.

Lastly, an Academic Cup was held during the Mission-Vision Month celebration to see how members of the Houses fair in different academic challenges. Each team selected their representatives for the two rounds of the competition. The first round involved different stations where participants performed tasks related to the lessons they learned in class. In this round reminiscent of the famous Amazing Race, members of the Blue Thunders for the lower grade category won while those of the Fawke’s Fam for the upper grades got the first place. On the other hand, the second round of the Academic Cup involved a quiz bee where each House sent a pair of representatives. At first, the pair worked together to garner the most number of points for their team. Eventually, the partners split and worked individually. After the three exciting rounds of the quiz bee, Clara Isabel Novicio of Blue Thunders emerged as the champion and awarded significant points in her House’s haul.
