MITISzens welcome SY 2019-2020 Moving Forward, Embracing Growth, Reaping Success

August 6, 2019 marked the commencement of a new school year and the members of the entire school community opened it with celebration and positivity.

During the second day, students had their first set of activities under the MITIS Tiger Buddy and Inter-
House Competition Program. Each MITISzen has an assigned Tiger Buddy with whom he/she will be
doing activities that will promote camaraderie and social development among the members of the
studentry. On the other hand, the student body was divided into three Houses; Blue Sharks, Gray
Panthers, and Maroon Hawks. Through different Inter-House activities, members of the different groups
will develop leadership skills, creativity, and sense of belongingness within the school community. These
programs were introduced for the first time last school year and more exciting activities are in store for
Tiger Buddies and Houses for this year.

A student orientation was held on the first day of classes to introduce new and old students the
programs and policies of MIT International School and the new activities it will have for the new year.
Ms. Maria Ana G. Yañez, Teacher-Leader for School Operations, shared the milestones the school has
had in the previous school year. She highlighted the successful Full Cycle Visit of the Western
Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) last April which resulted to the granting of another full six-
year accreditation through 2025. Furthermore, she congratulated six students for garnering Advanced
Placement (AP) Scholar Awards from the College Board for their outstanding AP performance.
Meanwhile, Mr. Richmond G. Calunsag, Teacher-Leader for Academics, discussed the school’s
philosophy, vision, and mission, core values, and the seven Expected Schoolwide Learning Results
(ESLRs). He also shared the academic policies of MITIS and the new program and activity offerings of the
school including the opening of French as a Foreign Language classes, the offering of Computer Science
Fundamentals program for elementary students, and the addition of the SAT exam as means of
providing further support for pre-college learners. Finally, Ms. April Anne A. Dela Peña, Guidance
Counsellor, and Mr. Jose Maria Victor Q. Manuel, Teacher-Leader for Student Affairs, talked about the
school’s Student Support Services, Student Activity and Discipline Programs.

The week ended with the Parents and Guardians Orientation held last Saturday. In this program, the
school acknowledge the support extended by parents and guardians to the success of the school
through giving awards, tokens, and raffle prizes. It was emphasized among the attendees the
importance of open and collaborative communication among the stakeholders of the school all in the
aim of achieving success for all students.

MIT International School, under the helm of its School Director, Mr. Dae Kwan Chung, continues its
journey towards Fostering Creative Minds and Living Well with Others.
